History:
Ian spent 22 years in the RAAF serving as a weapons systems technician and flight engineer. During that time, he maintained and operated a diverse selection of aircraft from helicopter gun-ships to strategic transports. He also recruited for the Australian Defence Forces. After leaving the military in 1998, Ian spent a short time in the real estate industry, then returned to aviation working for two major Australian aviation and defence companies.
Ian began writing to tell tales of his experiences in the military and of my life in general. His first anecdotal yarn was called ‘The Vein of it All’ and told of the trials of undergoing varicose vein surgery. He continued to write urged on by the positive comments he received from family and friends. Ian wrote stories of owning a powerboat, travelling to Thailand and suffering chemical burns while flying in a helicopter. Some of these were published.
Ian decided to write his first novel, ‘To Do or Die’ after it became too big to be a short story. The idea for the story evolved from combining two concepts he was toying with. One concerned the use of Australian weapons in Bougainville and the other involving a confrontation between members of an air force aircraft flight crew. The draft was completed in 2001 but it took three years and two publishers to finally see it in print. Meanwhile, Ian has published his second novel ‘Echidna’ and completed a third as well as drafting a couple of screenplays. He has also conducted presentations to people interested in the art of writing and understanding publishing. He presented on-air book reviews on ABC radio from February,
2008 to December 2009.
